Training in autism for parents and professionals

Lisa is a very experienced and accomplished trainer in the field of autism. She regularly runs courses for parents and support professionals. Courses range from Level 1 awareness of autism to Level 3 which is a more in depth look into why behaviours occur and strategies to cope with them. In addition to providing information, workshops also give adults the opportunity to meet with others facing similar challenges.
South West Autism also offer bespoke autism training to schools and colleges adapted to the individual needs of the establishment. Training is available to Sendcos, teachers and support staff.

Parent Support
We offer support to parents who need to make sense of their child's behaviours and difficulties. Practical help given to parents whose child is diagnosed or awaiting diagnosis.

Community Mentoring
  • Providing social communication opportunities for young people who would benefit from accessing the wider community.
  • Support to undertake activities in a variety of settings.
  • Help reduce anxiety around engaging with the local community including life, independence and social skills.

Tutor/Mentoring
We are able to support young people who struggle with the social and sensory demands of education. Some are in special schools, others in mainstream or on part time timetables whilst some children are home educated. Our support services include advisory and training for professionals, developing coping strategies for the child and offering off site education (by our qualified teacher). We aim to develop a young person's self-esteem, social understanding and confidence along with academic success. Our qualified teacher specialises in building the confidence of children in maths and literacy.
This can be in small groups (max 4) or 1-1.
Also homework club is available for small groups for those who need confidence boosting.

ASSOCIATED THERAPISTS

South West Autism is proud to have two associated therapists; Robyn Ferns, Autplay Therapist and Lucy Colcombe, Speech and Language Therapist:

ROBYN FERNS, SEQUOIA THERAPY - AUTPLAY THERAPIST  www.sequoiatherapy.co.uk/

Play therapy helps children understand muddled feelings and upsetting events that they have not had the chance to sort out properly.  Children use play to communicate at their own level and at their own pace without feeling interrogated or threatened.

Robyn works with parents and families to provide the necessary knowledge, tools, guidance and support, working together to develop healthier patterns relating to communicating.

Robyn states: I am passionate about helping children and young people lead happy and fulfilled lives.  I use play, a child's natural form of communication, to help them understand and play through their worries and difficulties and find ways to heal themselves.
